My mother was a ballet dancer and her rigorous training prevented her from indulging in the cakes and pastries that crowned our holiday dinners. But, oh, how she loved this compote. Knowing my mother’s fondness for lemons, my aunt Annette would load the compote with this mouth-puckering fruit, so this is one compote that won’t strike you as too sweet.
