Black Bun is synonymous with ‘first footing’, the tradition of bringing gifts to your friends and neighbours after the bells on Hogmanay. Robert Louis Stevenson even talks about these buns in his book, Picturesque Notes on Edinburgh written in 1879, in which he says that many stores he walked past displayed them in their windows for sale. Bring good wishes for the year ahead to your neighbours by baking these tasty treats for them.
