  • 5 large cooking apples, such as jonathan, that will keep their shape when cooked
  • 2 cups white sugar

  1. Peel, quarter, and core the apples. Cut in fairly thick wedges, lengthwise.
  2. Combine the sugar, cinnamon sticks, vinegar, whole cloves, water or fruit juice, and several drops to red food coloring and heat to boiling. Let simmer, covered, for 15 minutes. Allowing the syrup to steep overnight will add to the flavor.
  3. Return the syrup to a boil. Add the a
