White miso gives this easy dish a mild, mellow umami flavor. We pair the soybean paste with mirin, sake, and brown sugar in a glaze that delivers savory and caramelized notes to the roasted sweet potatoes. The result is a showstopping side for nearly any meal.


  • 5 small Japanese sweet potatoes or 3 medium Jewel yams, halved lengthwise
  • 2 tablespoons neutral oil


Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a large bowl, combine the sweet potatoes, oil, and a large pinch of salt. Toss to coat evenly. Arrange in a single layer cut side down on the prepared baking sheet.
