Winter melon, despite the name, grows in tropical climates and is harvested in the summer. The unripe melons are green in colour, but the mature melons develop a blotchy white skin that appears to be a light dusting of snow, hence the name ‘winter melon . Moreover, the melon keeps well in cold storage (as in a potato cellar) and is most often eaten in the winter months, other melons having long since been consumed.
