Sometimes when I’ve gone out for dinner and get back when the shops are still open in the States, I phone Kitchen Arts & Letters in New York and ask what interesting books they’ve got in at the moment. My alcohol-induced long-distance phone call becomes very expensive: the mere recital of the credit card number and boxloads of books arrive – the memory suppressed, a surprise – some weeks later.
