Mesir means Egypt, but why the name is used here I do not know. My guess is that this is Muslim food. In fact, as I explained in an earlier book,
Indonesian Food and Cookery, this dish came to Indonesia from India. But I am almost certain that, even further back in time, it was a Middle Eastern dish similar to what is now called borek. Somehow it reached Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, and its name changed on the way. Here in Padang there is also a sweet martabak called
