Banjar is short for Banjarmasin, a large town in Kalimantan Timur or East Kalimantan. We made the mistake of not visiting Banjarmasin, and went to Balikpapan and Samarinda instead. The whole area around Banjarmasin is reckoned to be the real centre of Kalimantan food. Dishes like soto Banjar, sate Banjar and ikan asam pedas Banjar are known all over Indonesia.
