Every visitor to Yogyakarta goes to see the temple complex at Prambanan, about 15 kilometres out of town on the Solo road. In 1960, the scene was very different from what it is today; there were virtually no tourists, and very few Indonesians could afford to travel any distance to see their own historic monuments.
