Indonesians, especially women, love eating under-ripe fruit. It must be fruit that is still crunchy, and that doesn’t make a mess when peeled and sliced. Their demands do not stop there: the crunchy, slightly sour-tasting fruit must be dipped into something hot and sweet. On a hot and steamy afternoon, on your open veranda anywhere in the tropics, a mixed fruit rujak can be very refreshing. If you are like me, you will soon become addicted to it as an appetizer; it is not really a dessert.
