As far as I know, this is an exclusively Indonesian food product. I don’t think any other Asian country makes emping. You can get them in Malaysia and the Philippines, but I am pretty sure they are imported from Indonesia, which certainly exports them to Europe and Australia.
Emping are made from melinjo nuts, crushed and dried in the sun. They look something like underdone potato crisps, but the flavour is quite different: dry, savoury but not salty, slightly nutty. To cook them, drop a few at a time into hot oil in a wok and let them sizzle for just a few seconds. They
