The name of this recipe, I think, comes from Dutch, but I have never been quite sure whether the recipe itself originated in Holland or in Indonesia. I have always thought of it as a typically Indonesian dish, because my grandmother used to make it so often; and certainly Indonesian cooks, if they did not invent pergedel, have adopted them.
