This pizza, the first variation on the classic Pizza Marinara, was created in honour of Queen Margherita of Savoy when she and her husband were on holiday in Naples at the end of the plague epidemic. The queen had heard tell of this wonderful new speciality called pizza and was very keen to try it out. Raffaelle Esposito, the best local pizza maker, was called to the court. He created a pizza with a topping of tomato, basil and mozzarella and named it Margherita
