Fennel grows wild In Sicily and Sardinia, and even in California, It’s unlikely, however, that you are going to find enough wild fennel for this recipe. But you do not have to abandon the idea of making this delicious soup. Cultivated fennel, also called sweet anise, is widely available at markets. (If you want to garnish the soup with fennel fronds, you may have to ask your produce person to save them for you, as many markets trim off the leafy tops.)
