Achara-ni means “a simmered dish prepared in a foreigner’s way.” In the nineteenth century, Dutch and Chinese living in Nagasaki were called achara-san. Achara means “the other side,” and achara-san implies the people who live on the other side of the street, river, or town. In the Edo Era (1600 to 1868) foreigners lived in a segregated area of town.
