Sukiyaki is a popular dish all over Japan. There is a story behind this famous dish. In the past, when farmers and hunters were out in the mountains and fields, they would cook wild game that they caught on a scythe, ski, that they carried with them on their treks. Hence this dish was named ski-yaki, “scythe-cooking.” When the Meiji government began promoting the consumption of beef in the late nineteenth century, the principal ingredient of sukiyaki switched from game to beef
