When the hot and humid summer months approached during my childhood, my mother was always busy redecorating each room in our house. Heavy wool curtains and cushions were replaced with light straw blinds and cotton cushions. Paintings of winter and autumn scenes were changed for ones illustrating summer subjects. Heaters were wiped thoroughly and stored away, and, in the days before air conditioning, electric fans were brought into each room.
