These delicious small pies are from the Greek island of Crete. The combination of salty cheese, sweet fruit and resiny pine nuts is classic Sephardic. The pastries are likely to have been brought to Crete by Spanish Jews from Spain, Sicily or Turkey. The Cretan town of Chania had an ancient Jewish neighbourhood until the German occupation of World War II. Skaltsounakia can be offered with drinks or presented as part of a large meze.
