This Ashkenazic sour cream-dressed salad was once eaten by all of Eastern Europe’s Jews. Sometimes it was made with large black radishes instead of Turnips.

Ingredients

  • 2–4 young, tender turnips, peeled
  • ¼–½ onion, finely chopped
  • 2–3 drops

Method

  1. Thinly slice or coarsely grate the turnips. Alternatively, thinly slice half the turnips and grate the remaining half. Put in a bowl.

  2. Add the onion, vinegar, salt and pepper, toss together then stir in the sour cream. Serve chilled, g
