Hearty vegetables braised with dried fruit, and sometimes with orchard fruit such as apple or pear too, is a traditional a Shkenazic dish. Some versions contain meat and can be served as a main dish rather than as an accompaniment. The Yiddish expression gantze Tzimmes, meaning a “big deal”, is inspired by this dish, because it is full of rich, sweet and spicy flavours.
