Topped with fragrant fennel seeds, this moist white loaf is particularly delicious when it is slathered with butter and jam.


  • 450 g/1 lb/4 cups unbleached white bread flour

  1. Sift the white bread flour and salt together into a large bowl and stir in the crushed fennel seeds and caster sugar.
  2. Cream the yeast with a little of the lukewarm water, then stir in the remaining water. Make a well at the centre of the flour and pour in the yeast, using your fingers to gradually combine with flour from the edge of the well until a batter form
