Adding a shot of alcohol – cognac, brandy, tequila, calvados; liqueurs such as fraises de bois or cointreau, or even a little flavourful wine – helps to make a simple bowl of fruit salad a digestible yet festive way to end a celebratory meal.


  • 350 g/12 oz/2 cups mixed dried fruits, such as apples, pears, prunes


  1. Put the mixed dried fruit in a large pan with the cinnamon and cider or water. Heat gently until almost boiling, then cover the pan, lower the heat and cook gently for 12–15 minutes, to soften the fruit.

  2. Remove the pan from the heat a
