Put the sugar and water for the syrup into a saucepan and stir over low heat until the sugar has dissolved. Bring to the boil, then lower the heat and simmer for 1 minute. Draw the pan off the heat and add the lemon juice. (It will keep the colour of the apples and bananas.) Pour into a serving bowl and leave until cold.
