Method

In the large pot, combine the wine and sugar and bring to a boil. Cook at a boil for 5 minutes, then add the pears and the spices. Reduce the heat to a simmer, cover the pot, and cook the pears for 30 minutes, or until they are very tender and easily pierced with the tip of the paring knife.
