I do not know what to tell you about this recipe apart from the fact that it has become so much a part of my life that if I stopped cooking it, the sense of loss would be almost grief. I make it in large trays and cut it into mouth-sized pieces for a sweet canapé; I cook them individually and top with fresh summer fruits for a real show; and I bake it, as here, in a round tin and enjoy it with the family with lashings of chocolate sauce and cream.
