Whether you get smoked or green ham is up to you, but it is much better to cook your own, because then you get a good ham stock to use for lentil soup at a later date.
Much as I prefer to buy and cook meat on the bone, it is undeniably easier to buy boned ham. Also, if ham is left on the bone, the part nearest the bone tends to get awfully dry after a few days.
