Where I grew up, in South Carolina’s Lowcountry, there’s a New Year’s Day tradition that involves boiling black-eyed peas with collard greens and rice into a stewy dish called Hoppin’ John. It’s supposed to bring good luck. I’ve always loved the combination, and I don’t get why we don’t bring those flavors into other times of year.
