The caper berry is the fruit of a wild crawling vine that grows all over the Mediterranean and is the source of an essential ingredient in any Mediterranean kitchen. Capers as we know them are the plucked and cured buds of caper flowers; if left untouched, the buds bloom into bursts of delicate white petals surrounding a shock of dark purple stamens.
