Appealing to the child in all of us, the banana split is one of the easiest ways to finish a meal. And good ingredients make it into a real treat.
In a shallow glass dish arrange the banana, split down the middle, and add the ice cream. Top with the whipped cream and, if using, pour the hot chocolate sauce over the top. Scatter the almonds on top of that.
Serve the chocolate sauce separately, and for those who do not like their chocolate ration this way, heat some luxury caramel spread (dulce de leche) and offer it instead.
