Mexico’s well-known tres leches cake was either inspired by the English trifle, a layered dessert of soaked cake layers and custard, or by a milk-soaked sponge cake dessert from Nicaragua, where it was promoted by canned milk products, like Nestlé and Borden, with recipes provided on the can labels. I’ve taken the classic and increased the number to cinco leches (five milks).
