Poached pears is a classic dessert. It’s elegant enough to serve to company but also easy enough to serve to your family during the week.

You can change the flavor of this dessert each time you make it by seasoning the sugar syrup with either wine, coffee, or green tea. When I poach the pears in wine, I use red rather than white, because it makes the pears look more attractive. This dish is best prepared in the fall, when the pears are in season.
