Fried Spring Rolls

Unlike other spring rolls or egg rolls you might have had, this lumpia from Semarang (a city in Central Java) is stuffed with a bamboo shoot filling. As a little girl, I had to work for my lumpia, and rolling them was one of the first kitchen tasks I learned. Despite all the practice I’ve had, I still can’t fold them as neatly and tightly as Julia can. Oh well, at least they’re just as delicious!
