Thousands of flower-crowned pilgrims make their way to the basilica of Chalma, near Malinalco in Mexico, an ancient pre-Conquest shrine now dedicated to Our Lord of Chalma. Chalma will forever be a pilgrimage spot for me, too, though I’m drawn by greed, not piety. My pilgrimage will be to Our Lady of Heavenly Peas, who sits in a small plaza leading to the basilica. From this food vendor I learned this ravishing, drop-dead-simple thing to do with peas. She sits there, pushing the rather wart
