The word we know as tamarind came from the Arabic tamar-i-hind, the “date of India.” Date of India or date of California, or anywhere, makes a perfect chutney. Versions of date and tamarind chutney appear in several South Asian cuisines, all the way down to Sri Lanka. It’s not necessary to use Medjools for this chutney, though of course they’d do very well.

Fried cubes of Creamy Panir or any soft cheese are heavenly with date chutney.
