When Giovanna Passannanti was married in 1938, she went straight from her family home to her mother-in-law’s house, as many young brides did at that time. The newlyweds lived in the countryside of Sicily six months of the year on an extensive farm where everyone worked together. “Even the old were strong and muscular,” she remembers. It was an outdoor life in a small autonomous world. “We grew all our vegetables, had our own chickens and rabbits, our olive trees produced ol
