Every year, on one of our journeys at least, we turn off at Valognes after leaving Cherbourg, and drive down the Cotentin peninsula to spend the night at Avranches or Mont St Michel. The road goes through Lessay where the grand romanesque abbey church has been restored, and then across the flat sandy country that borders the sea. We always look for the big notice that proclaims the virtues of the carrots of Créances. Carrots, I know, do like sandy soil and these have the added virtue of bei
