Translated into English this delicacy means ‘slipper filled with apples’ because of the resemblance in the shape to a type of shoe that was extremely fashionable at the time of the pastries creation. The English name, ‘apple turnover’, refers to the fact that the pastry is turned over and the apples encased inside. Apple turnovers were first made in Britain in the 15th century and at that time were known as ‘apple pasties’.
