The Kugelhopf was created in the city of Lemberg in 1609, which was under Polish rule at the time. The cake was brought to France by King Stanislas II of Poland; when he lost his kingdom his son-in-law gave him the Duchy of Alsace-Lorraine, a Provence in the northwest of France.
