This French delicacy originates from the city of Bordeaux; a busy shipping port that received luxury goods from the French colonies like Tahiti - such as sugar, vanilla and rum which only the wealthy were able to afford. Often, as the cargo was being unloaded, the crates would be damaged and local nuns would wait by the ships and beg for the damaged goods to give out to the poor. With these exotic ingredients the nuns added eggs, flour and milk and created a delicious gâteau.
