Evidence of grilled snails has been found in archeological digs that are dated as far back as 3000 BC. The first evidence of snails as a food source dates back to ancient Rome, where they were reared in special gardens called cochleariae. In these gardens, they were fattened with milk and grain (sometimes even wine) until they were too big to fit into their shells.
