As for so many people, my first time with a persimmon was rough. It took me years of avoidance and fear before I ventured down that road again. For the uninitiated, let me explain. There are two types of persimmon, and the meltiest-in-the-mouth one (usually found in Persian/Middle Eastern shops) has, until it is ripe, a mouth-numbing skin which feels like a nasty case of anaphylaxis.
