I always imagine true hippies and good Presbyterians have a bowl of leftover, morally airtight, always-a-bridesmaid, brown rice in the refrigerator. For such as these, the morning breaks forth reward in the form of golden butter and dark sugar, which comes from puritanical surplus – a filthily sweet, rib-sticking bowl of breakfast joy.

Ingredients

  • 300 g/10½ oz/heaped cups short-grain brown rice, soaked for 2 hours, rinsed and drained

Method

To cook the rice, put the rice and salt in a heavy-based saucepan and add 600 ml/21 fl oz/generous cups wate
