I have a problem here. Since childhood hare has been my favourite game, a taste I share with F. X. Enderby who breakfasted off reheated hare stew with pickled walnuts; the hare being a gift from ’arry, near toothless chef at The Conway, whose preference was for ‘red coorant jelly and an ’art shaped croutong’.

I loved watching them, pre-game, on the downs at the eastern escarpment of Cranborne Chase above the Avon valley and close by two mysterious sites, Great Yews
