The Merrie Englander Cecil Sharp collected folksongs, mostly in Somerset and the Appalachians. Quite how folky these folksongs are is moot. David Harker, Sharp’s sternest critic, believes that the majority derive from ‘broadsides’, simple songsheets, and that ‘the oral tradition’ is chimerical.
