Barbecue sauces based on soft drinks turn up all across Planet Barbecue, and whether they owe their popularity to the sweet-sour flavor dynamic or simply to the convenience and whimsy of using a beverage to flavor the meat, I can’t say. What I can say is that you’ll find them throughout the Spanish-speaking world.
Place the soda, ketchup, and barbecue sauce in a saucepan and whisk to mix. Bring the sauce to a simmer over medium heat and let it simmer gently until thick and richly flavored, 10 to 15 minutes.
