This bread makes a striking centerpiece for any table. The recipe makes a star 15 inches (37.5 cm) in diameter. If you want a smaller star, reduce the weight and length of the pieces. Although you need only know how to make a four-string braid to make this loaf, you should not attempt it before you are fairly successful in rolling out and forming the strings. If you take too long, the first string will have risen while you are still shaping the last one. If you are not yet up to speed, or when the weather is warm, keep the dough in the refrigerator as you are forming the strings. It is also a good idea to place the completed outside of the loaf in the refrigerator while you are braiding the center.
