Knots, also called twisted rolls, always start out in the form of a string, which is then crossed or twisted in a wide variety of ways. (Simply joining the two ends of the string would not be considered a knot; it is simply a loop, or circle.) The single knot shown here is the fastest, easiest knot one can make.
