Hamantaschen literally translates to “Haman’s pockets,” although these three-cornered filled cookies are also said to represent Haman’s three-cornered hat. In either case, the cookies are named for Haman, whose story is told in the biblical Book of Esther. Haman was the prime minister of Persia and famous for his failed conspiracy to kill all of the Jews under his rule. His plan was prevented at the last moment due to the intervention of the Israelites Esther and Mordecai, and this victory
