Mom’s Apple Cake (Mor’s aäppelkaka), the traditional Swedish country-style variation of an apple pie, was standard at home and one of my favorites as a child. It was always served with a thick, rich vanilla sauce and, sometimes, whipped cream on the side. Because there was no pie tin to line, this dessert was quick and simple to prepare, and there was always a supply of stale bread either dried or already made into bread crumbs. Homemade apple jam was plentiful in the cellar after th
