You can certainly adjust this recipe to make the pastries in squares, rounds, or triangles instead of hearts, and can replace the cape gooseberries, which are admittedly hard to come by, with raspberries or small wedges of strawberry. The gooseberries are so decorative and unusual, though, I love to use them whenever I get the chance.

I first made these pastries to be included as part of a buffet assortment close to Valentine’s Day, a time of the year when cape gooseberries are most
